Man City 1-0 Tottenham: Crouch confirms Champions League place

Manchester City confirmed their place in the Champions League next year with a 1-0 win against Tottenham.

This time last season the corresponding fixture had decided the same prize would go to Spurs thanks to Peter Crouch’s goal in a 1-0 victory.

But this time around the tables were turned and it was an own goal from the England international which sealed City’s place in Europe’s premier European competition.

After an exciting opening half-hour which saw both sides create chances it was Tottenham who missed the best of them when Luka Modric shot wide from close range when an Aaron Lennon pass found him in acres of space in the area.

Moments later and the pendulum swung decisively City's favour as James Milner’s hard work was rewarded by Peter Crouch poking a cross into his own net from four yards out.

Late on Patrick Vieira looked to have sealed the win when his well timed effort beat Carlo Cudicini but William Gallas got back to bravely head off the line.

There was also good news for Roberto Mancini ahead of this weekend’s FA Cup final as Carlos Tevez came through the final 10 minutes unscathed.
The injured striker is facing a race against time to prove his fitness for the Wembley showpiece on Saturday but his showing against Spurs will have encouraged Mancini and City’s fans.
